Shared Garden Open day during June 2008
Shared Garden Open day
Saturday 14th June 2-4pm
Kingston Road, (off Musters Road)
West Bridgford
After last years success we have decided to open our gardens once again.
A lot has changed in the last 12 months, new faces and new ways of working.
At the beginning of September we had a re-think on how to take the gardens in the next 7 years cycle.
Five members of the group, felt that they wanted some more freedom and took over allotment 3 to do things their way. They became the Off-Shoots and although we still share all the tools, the use of the class room, green house and shed, what happens behind the hedge of Allotment 3 is organised by this smaller group.
The other 10 members wanted to keep things as they were. i.e Karina doing the planning, seed ordering, and job allocation and they felt comfortable with a more directive style of working.
We are now nearly half way through the year and the gardens are looking better than ever before. The off-shoots in allotment 3 got a renewed sense of ownership, their garden is looking very artistic with a little willow structure and a circular bed.
The other 5 allotment are looking good too. Tamsin, who started after last years open day, has started a flower bed next to the recreational site in allotment 1, a variety of beans, peas and lettuces of all colours and flavours are popping up in allotment 2.
The carrots, onions and beetroot in allotment 4 are healthy and strong this year.
At the time of writing we are just about to transplant a huge array of pumpkins and squashes in allotment 5. For this allotment we were lucky to have obtained 3 greenhouses from Paul, a friend down the road. Hopefully Laraine and Martha will grow some wonderful, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers and aubergines in them for us.
Allotment 6, our fruit allotment is still shared with the Off-Shoots, each person has a bed to look after and weed and all the fruit is shared by the group.
Whether it is 5 am or 9pm people are popping in to weed, water, sow or transplant, or just to sit under the trees at the strangest times of the day. It truly is an oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle of busy West Bridgford.
If you too would like to experience it, why not pop over for the open day. We will be able to show you around, have some home made cakes/biscuits and elderflower cordial (from the gardens of course) and have a laze about in the sun (I hope)
Entry is Free but please give us a ring 0115 9147408 or email us to let us know that you are coming .(so that we have enough cake and juice!)
We look forward to welcoming you !
